For most people, sharing life with someone is a key ingredient in life, sort of like water, food and shelter. Sometimes, that bond could be made with an animal instead, such as in the case of Luke Baldwin. When his parents leave him, he finds a friend in the old dog, Dan. Dan is Luke's uncle Henry's dog; one who is half blind.
For me, the bond between Luke and Dan were the main point of the story, not Uncle Henry or deaths of parents. Luke was an ordinary person, as Dan was an ordinary dog. Yet, they created a special bond that could never be replaced. When Luke was down or feeling lonely, he would go to his faithful friend and make adventures or just hang.
In this story, Uncle Henry appears to be a wise man, calculating what he needs and what he wants. Luke wants to be just like him, until the dreadful time of which Uncle Henry tries to get rid of Dan. Dan almost drowns by the hand of the foreman and a stone, which was tied to his neck. The devotion between Dan and Luke though saved him, because Luke came to rescue him. After Luke rescued Dan, he went to Mr. Kemps, the man who knew both Dan and Luke and enjoyed having them. Luke then told Mr. Kemps the whole story, and what ole Kemps said was to make a deal with his uncle. A deal to keep Dan. The same day, Luke shows his aunt and uncle Dan. As they gasped in wonder, he told them the deal and Uncle Henry accepted.
That day, Luke realized that he didn't want to know all the business stuff, but to be wise like Mr. Kemp, and learn to handle people like his uncle; who cared about family, but didn’t realize the joy things could bring to people. People who could always say no, but didn’t want to say yes.
In real life, this can be seen all over the world. There have been many cases where an animal's owner gets hurt and the animal wont leave them; they would have to climb into the ambulance too and lays with their human, their friend. This also happens the other way around, human weeping for dog or animal. When this happens, people call it loyalty and sweet. What it really means is that the animal is devoted to the human; and if the human was awake, he would be there every step out of devotion to his dog. It could also be called love, friendship, and adoration. But it all means the same thing, you would do anything to protect that loved one.
I can also relate it to my life. When I was little, we had a chocolate lab, who I tried to imagine dying. But whenever I did, I would start crying because I didn't know what I would do without her. Now, I have my dog Lucy, who I feel the same way for. When I feel lonely or sad, I love to just go in my room with her, and listen to music or something and block everything that is going on, out.
Luke is like me in a way, as I him. We both need that friendship in life, and we both have it with our dogs. Sometimes, living a life seems like it's not worth it; until you see that beautiful dog face waiting for you at home. That's why this story is important to me; Luke discovers a new family and dream. He discovers more what the world is like, and who is in it.
